Making the old new again
An old comic, a new comic, sketchbook flowers, and revisiting a side project that I loved
This week I wanted to share a comic I made in 2022 after I was let go from a job I loved, just days before the 2 year anniversary of my mom’s death.
Beginnings and Endings
A Funky Mini Comic
I only caught bits and pieces of SAW’s Friday Night Comics workshop with
this week. The focus was on “playing with patterns, textures and icons in visual storytelling.” We were meant to take a vivid memory from childhood and capture it in a short paragraph. Then we made icons from specific words in the paragraph, and were to use them in creating our panels. I was in and out of the room tending to my garden during the workshop, so I can’t attest to how much of the rules I followed, but it was definitely a helpful exercise in loosening up and not being so literal.*Updated to add: Fionn wrote a great post on his Substack about this exercise, if you’d like to check it out!
Fashion, but make it art history?
In April, I read a post titled “It’s ok to love fashion!” by Elle Dresses Well and it reminded me of a personal project I did in my early twenties where I’d create these clothing collages inspired by well known works of art. As a very non-fashion person living in New York among very fashion-y people at the time, it seemed like a world I wasn’t welcome to get to know without a trust fund. However, this project was a bridge of sorts. It made the fashion world less scary to me, and helped me explore my personal style in a unique way.
In 2018, I wrote an essay that discussed the project for a fashion economy type of publication, but wanted to revisit it with more of a lens on the actual project, my process, and what I gained from it. I reworked it and published the new essay to Medium if you’d like to give it a read! (Don’t worry, that link avoids the paywall.)
From my sketchbook this week
I broke out my watercolors for the first time in years in order to capture some of my favorite spring colors. There are these purple and yellow flowers everywhere and they make me so happy!
Thanks for reading. ‘Til next week!
So beautiful!!!
