I feel like accountability is underrated.
In my everyday life, I have few opportunities to let others down. This is by design. A crippling lifelong fear of disappointing others led me to an adulthood free of most tasks that would require others to rely on me (lol don’t worry I’m in therapy).
But disappointing myself is different. I can hold myself accountable or not, and no one else gets hurt. Right?
The negatives of not holding ourselves accountable have varying levels of not cool, man. At best, we don’t stick to our healthy eating habits. At worst, government officials text about war plans in the group chat and still keep their jobs and security clearance.
If it’s a slippery slope, I’d really like to make sure I stay squarely on the side of holding myself accountable.
At the beginning of March, I talked about wanting to make a zine:
It wasn’t just a whimsical thought – the purpose was so that I could have something physical to share with others, because I’ve been feeling isolated and lacking in creative community.
I’m happy to report that this week I’ll be joining a month-long zine making workshop hosted by
called Zine Lab: From Idea to Publication. It’s a four week guided workshop “to help you plan, create, and distribute your zine.” Just what I was looking for! (I highly recommend checking out Carolyn’s Substack, See You – it’s one of the few I prize so much that I’m a paid subscriber.)I’m excited to create a zine about an idea I’ve been noodling with for a while – the slog of self care. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a bit more fanfare around the small steps forward that we make in our personal growth journeys? I think so, too! This zine will not solve that. But it will be about that. It will make you laugh and smile, and that’s what matters to me.
Accountability to ourselves certifies to our brains that yes, we matter. Yes, self, I hear you and want you to be happy, so let’s make this happen. Another self care win, woohoo!
Keeping on theme, I’ll leave you with a comic I made a while ago about the most revered of self care rituals – the Bubble Bath.
Thanks for reading Daydronk!
Thanks for the shoutout Delaney! And omg I feel this exact way about baths—love them in theory, not in practice!
I have cracked the box cube. How to arrange it that is. By the end of the week I will email you 2 x PDF files, assuming you are happy to send me an email address. Mine is roberthowardbeeston@icloud.com Regards 🐰
