This week was a weird one. I made the mistake of reading about current events, and then didn’t leave my bed for two days.
There were also temps in the 40’s to 60’s, side by side with like two blizzards. As someone whose temperament is highly suggestible based on the weather, this did not bode well for me.
I attempted to cancel my therapy appointment so I could avoid all the squirmy things I was feeling. Luckily it didn’t work. Turns out that talking through your confusion and uncertainty really does help.
Workshops
I love attending the SAW Friday Night Comics workshop live whenever possible, for the practice but also the camaraderie. A recent session I attended was hosted by
, who I’ve enjoyed following on Substack (and Instagram, before my cold turkey quit) for some time now.It was a fun one spent reminiscing about childhood obsessions. I immediately knew what my comic would be about: my childhood CocaCola memorabilia collection. It was more decor that peppered my room than a proper collection of anything. I just remember it taking up a lot of real estate on my shelves.
One thing I’ve been trying to get better at is a concise story. Time goes fast in these workshops, which makes for a good challenge to identify the most important points to include right from the beginning. I tried to do that here, with varying levels of success. But the exploration is the point! These workshops are always fun and great practice.
This Week’s Sketchbook
Here are the latest sketchbook bits that I posted to Notes.
And lastly,
I thought you might like to see the (d)evolution of my painting skills. I recently came across this ink drawing of an unmade bed with floral sheets and curtains. I painted it back in college (from a dreamy photo I’d found on Tumblr) with little ink bottles that I still have among my art supplies.
Inspired, I figured I’d take those ~15 year old inks out to play a bit.
Which resulted in this:
Not, in fact, like riding a bike.
But I’m working on it! I took a painting workshop with Gayle and Jennifer in December, and will be joining their next one this afternoon. Hopefully, I’ll be back to beautifully rendering some messy bed sheets in no time.
